Winter Housing

The Alpha Delta Phi House offers student housing for the UBC Winter Session (Sept. – April). This is when our Fraternity and the House is most vibrant and fun. The days are filled with sleepy conversations around a cereal box before morning classes, jokes and jabs back and forth as the guys stroll in for a hot lunch of hamburgers and soup, and maybe a quick game of foosball before its back to the school grind for the afternoon. Dinnertime is much the same with stories and laughs going around the table…but tonite is Wednesday (ADP meeting night), so everyone is focused on the steaks coming off the grill and the sorority exchange later on that evening!

With all the socials, charity drives, study nights, pre-parties, intramural sports, etc., life in the House (and the Fraternity) can be as busy and involved as you want it to be. However, this is first and foremost a student residence… so most nights are quiet. Walking thru the halls, you’ll find doors closed with those behind engaged in heavy-duty study time… but you might also see a few senior Brothers gathered around a desk helping out a 1st year with some calculus homework… or even, more likely, several guys throughout the House taking a study ‘break’ (i.e. a galactic battle royale across the computer network).

Because of the close-quarters, communal-living responsibilities, and interactive atmosphere during the school year, you’ll quickly develop a bond with the 25 other guys in the House… and, soon, you’ll start to think of ADP as YOUR House. Which is great!… because it is yours to respect, use, and enjoy. At the end of a long year in April, we want all our Brothers and boarders to have been as comfortable as possible and had an extremely positive experience.

Eligibility and Priority Room Assignment

As this is a Fraternity House for the British Columbia Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi, Active Brothers and Pledges obviously get priority room assignment. However, as we have an open application process, everyone who submits completed forms and deposits by the stated deadline will be fairly considered and notified shortly thereafter of room assignment decisions. Certainly, we will always do our best to accommodate anyone interested in joining ADP with housing… and often there are even a few rooms available after this process for general boarders.

In order to be eligible for room assignment at The House (and, correspondingly, membership into the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity) for the UBC Winter Session, you must meet all the following criteria:

1. Male
2. 17 – 25 years old
3. Enrolled in any undergraduate program at UBC (preferably 1st or 2nd year)
4. Registered in and maintaining a ‘full-time’ student course load (as defined by UBC and your corresponding Faculty)

Please understand that room assignment decisions are ultimately made at the sole discretion of House Management. Holding a Fraternity Executive position, being in “good standing” with the Fraternity and House (with all dues and fees paid), a spotless House conduct and duty record (if a previous tenant), and active involvement in the organization and participation in Fraternity and House events are all criteria that will favorably reflect on your evaluation for tenancy.

If you are not a Fraternity member (yet) but really want to live in the House, you should know that room vacancies are limited. However, you may be wondering how you can improve your chances of room assignment. Well… its as simple as getting to know us and allowing us to get to know you.

1. Contact the House Manager: Ask questions about the House… tell us what you’re looking for in student housing, and we can discuss if this communal-living environment suits your wants and needs.

2. Contact the Fraternity President (604-221-7816) or Rush Chairman (see ‘Rush’ section of website) to learn more about ADP: Its our goal every year to fill the House with ADP’s… and this includes new members (or ‘pledges’) who are interested and enthusiastic about the Fraternity. Sure, as you read this right now, you may know very little about ADP… but, if you come by the House for a summer RUSH event, meet the guys, talk with your peers about what activities and benefits ADP offers, etc., then you’ll be that much more confident that ADP and the House are right for you.

Room & Board

For the Winter Session, The House offers UBCstudents everything they need for a successful and comfortable academic year… and our overall room & board rates are among the lowest on campus. Please see the ‘House Facilities’ section of this website for more info and pics of the House and individual rooms. Further, please see the ‘How to Apply’ section for rates and lease information.

Why the ADP House?… versus UBC res, for example? Well…

• Single rooms: 1st and 2nd year students often have to settle for shared rooms with UBC rez.and you do not always know who your roommates are going to be.
• Furnished: Rooms are supplied with new oak furniture (desk, captain’s bed, and shelving… plus there is a mattress, desk chair, closet shelving, blinds, etc. All you need is bedding, a desk lamp, and your own personal stuff!

• Private bathrooms: 19 of our 26 rooms (2nd & 3rd floors) have private bathrooms (shared between two adjoining rooms). The convenience, privacy, and cleanliness of personal facilities is a very nice perk indeed; however, for those of you interested in larger rooms who have no problem sharing a common bathroom, then our 7 main floor rooms might be a better alternative.
• Utilities included: All utilities are included with your room and board rate… plus high-speed internet, basic cleaning and bathroom supplies, common-area digital TV (with all movie and sports channels), etc.

• Common-area facilities: As a resident, for the most part you have free access to all the common areas of the House which includes living / reading room (w/ fireplace, foosball, and dvd player), rec room (w/ leather couches, 50” tv, dvd, stereo and surround speaker system, pool table, pop machine, bar, and poker table), bike / exercise room, porch / patio (w/ BBQ), laundry room (w/ coin-op washer and dryers), dining room (w/ local-only phone), and commercial kitchen. All of this available for your use 24/ 7… common lounges at UBC rez don’t offer these facilties.

• Kitchen facilities: Kitchen and servery areas are open 24/7 for the use of all residents… so you always have access to common food fridges and cooking equipment. Want a late night snack?… you just have to walk downstairs to grab a bowl of cereal or make a sandwich… no 15 minute walk cross-campus to a 24hr cafeteria. Its just like home! (complete with a nagging mom… errr, House Manager…. making sure you put your food and dirty plates away too).

• Cook & prepared meals: The best part of our meal plan (aside from 24/7 access to all-you-can-eat food) is our in-house cook. There is nothing better after a hard day of classes (and tromping back to the House in the winter rain)… than to open up the door and smell a hot meal waiting for you. Our cook prepares lunch and dinner Monday – Friday each week… served buffet style. If you’re schedule forces you to miss a meal… no problem… he will put a bag lunch or hot plate away for you. For weekends, he even makes several casserole-type dishes so that those too lazy to cook can also eat. With our cook managing the kitchen, parents can be assured that their son is eating healthy, home-cooked style food… and that all kitchen facilities and meal preparation follow ‘FOODSAFE’ procedures. NOTE: If possible, the cook will try to act on a tenant’s meal suggestion… however, no menu alternatives or special dietary considerations can be accommodated with the ADP meal plan.
