Philanthropy

Philanthropy is one of the pillars of a strong fraternity. It is essential for the betterment of the fraternity as well as the community at large. In Alpha Delta Phi, we take our motto Manus Multae Cor Unum (Many Hands One Heart) very seriously. Our members are involved with philanthropy both on an individual level and as a collective. We are involved in numerous ongoing philanthropic efforts, participate in countless charity events on and off campus, and organize many of our own fundraising endeavours. We believe that any and every effort should be made to help those in need – be they brothers, community members, or complete strangers.

Chapter Initiatives:

Alpha Delt’s are extremely well respected in the community for providing support to many different projects and organizations.

  • For the past three years we have been narrowly edged out of winning the Artistic Triple Crown, earned for winning each of Order of Omega’s Songfest, Gamma Phi Beta’s The Gammies, and Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash. In the 2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2011/2012 school years we won the former two events but couldn’t quite claim victory in the latter.
  • We hold an annual Car Smash in order to raise money for our chapter’s chosen charity organizations.
  • Our chapter donates thousands of dollars each year to our chosen philanthropic organizations: The BC Literacy Foundation and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
  • In order to raise money for the Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay and the ORBIS Pull for Sight Challenge, we hold numerous charity BBQ’s, car washes, and parties. These events respectively entail having at least one brother run around a track for 24 hours straight and collectively pulling a 757 Jumbo Jet.
  • The brothers of Alpha Delta Phi participate in every charity event on campus, including: Alpha Delta Pi Diamond Ball, Alpha Gamma Delta’s Alpha Race, Alpha Omicron Pi Goes Blue for Arthritis, Alpha Phi’s Dating Game and Heart Throb, Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Book Drives, Kappa Alpha Theta’s Cakes for CASA and UBECI Salsa for Ecuador, IFC’s Greek Buddy Olympics, and many more.

Member Initiatives:

Alpha Delt’s individually support and lead a wide variety of charitable organizations, donating enormous amounts of their personal time and energy to do so.

  • Members of Alpha Delta Phi currently make up the entire Board of Governors of The Ubyssey student newspaper and have many active volunteers and staff members working for the paper
  • A number of our brothers have high-ranking positions in UBC REC, including UBC REC Ultimate Director, and volunteer to help run the organization and it’s numerous leagues and events
  • Our brothers hold positions on the executive of UBC’s Model United Nations, including the position of president, and volunteer to organize all of their events and meetings
  • We annually have a large number of members volunteer to run and support UBC Imagine Day, UBC FirstWeek, and UBC Orientations in order to help transition new students into the UBC lifestyle in community
  • Some of our more film-oriented brothers help run the UBC Film Society by organizing their various beer gardens and other events as well as ensuring the smooth operating of the Norm Theater
  • Those of our brothers with strengths in the water serve as instructors for PADI, helping the largest diving association open up the oceans, seas, and inlets to those interested in diving
  • Many of our brothers either hold positions in or volunteer for various student societies, including: the Engineering Undergraduate Society, Arts Undergraduate Society, UBC Political Science Students Association, UBC International Relations Students Association, UBC Film Society, UBC History Association, and so on.
  • Brothers of Alpha Delta Phi also volunteer with numerous other charitable organizations, including: the Canadian Red Cross, Rotary International, St. Johns Ambulance, the SHARE Society, Youth Canada, and many more.

Even before joining Alpha Delta Phi, I was always impressed with the amount of passion and dedication its members have for philanthropy. It’s an incredible experience to be a member of a group of young men so interested and invested in the betterment of their community. Every year a group of bright, ambitious young faces provide fresh ideas and renewed vigour into our philanthropy endeavours and it’s truly amazing to see. It’s for these, among many other reasons that Alpha Delta Phi is one of UBC’s most active organizations with regards to philanthropy.
