It’s no secret that the brothers of Alpha Delta Phi BC Chapter are relentless in their pursuit of achievement whether it be social, academic or athletic, and even when all 3 of these aspects come together we do our best to make it work. Halloween weekend was such a case, where a gruelling week of midterms for the majority of the brothers ended with a Friday night Halloween bash at the house. Sleep deprived and a little worse for wear we all rallied early Saturday morning and assembled at the starting line of UBC REC’s Great Trek Race and Relay. The race is one of UBC’s oldest traditions, and it is held every year to commemorate the Great Trek of 1922 that led to the building of UBC’s Point Grey Campus. Amidst beautiful autumn scenery that we were a bit too tired to fully appreciate, 12 brothers ran the 8km relay, with 4 of us comprising the team that took first place overall and added one more trophy to our display case. Congratulations are in order for the winning team comprising Active Brothers Luka Bogdanovic, Anton Røthe and George Hatzikiriakos, as well as Pledge Brother Mario Mendez. This is now the second year in a row Alpha Delta Phi has taken first place at the Great Trek, and hopefully not the last!

As ever, good times were enjoyed across the board, from the myriad of stories to the celebration and recognition of achievements, both in the Active Chapter and Alumni Association. As ever, the active brothers would like to thank all who attended and a special mention goes out to Alumnus Brother Howard Eckman who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award that has been named in his honour. See you all next year!

A new year has dawned and brought with it new life back to the UBC campus after a fairly sleepy summer. Needless to say, we at Alpha Delta Phi could not be more excited as September means… RUSH! We are most looking forward to meeting all the young men who wish to find out more about what we are all about. In turn, we hope that we can get to know all those coming through the Rush process and enjoy the good times that are bound to ensue!

We at Alpha Delta Phi are currently looking for motivated young men who wish to better themselves through the bonds of brotherhood, and involvement in both fraternal and campus activities at UBC. Above all though, it is most important for us to find those who will be happy to not just call us friends, but their brothers. For more information on Rush events, please check out the ‘Recruitment’ section of this website.

Another year has passed and training has ended prior to the biggest Intramural event of North America this school year! Storm the Wall! There have been over 3,500 participants this year and another great event put on by UBC REC yet again.
8 Men’s teams and 13 CoRec teams of Alpha Delta Phi stormed the wall this year, in which many of them made it through to the semi-finals, but only 3 Men’s teams made it to the finals. Phiolators, Alpha Deltanators and Alpha Delta Phorze were in the Hindmarch Finals along with Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, FIJI and our sport arch-rivals, Beta Theta Pi. An intense battle saw a Phi Delt wipe out on the cycle track, in which an ambulance had to be called, delaying the whole Storm schedule. However, Hindmarch finals continued and our top Men’s team eventually beat off the other fraternities to claim Number 1 in the Hindmarch Finals.
Being Hindmarch Champions, it was time for the UBC Divisional Finals that saw Alpha Delta Phi compete against the UBC MED team. With the brothers and the Alpha Delta Girls on the side cheering on Jesse Ory, Matthias Kempe, Jeff Hart, Luka Bogdanovic and Colin Keightley from the Phiolators, they pushed their limits, gave it everything they got in the rain and finally walking over the 12 foot wall to defeat the MED team to become UBC Champions for the 2nd year in a row.
So guess what?
Not only we are Storm the Wall 2011 Champions, BUT also Triple Crown Winners of 2011 too!
Congratulations boys on a fantastic result this year and now all that is left is the Sports Trophy!
Thank you to all the brothers who competed, all the brothers who cheered us on and especially UBC REC for putting on such a magnificent event.

Last week saw the end of another year in league sports. From soccer, basketball to ball hockey, Alpha Delt has had a mixed range of success throughout the year.
First semester, we had teams in Ball Hockey, Volleyball, Soccer, Futsal and Ultimate Frisbee. All Alpha Delt teams made it through into the playoffs, strong from normal league games, alas all the teams that made it to semi-finals or finals eventually lost. An unfortunate semester saw Alpha Delt and Adam’s Apples play in both soccer and futsal elite finals for the divisional trophy but after a hard fought battle, the Engineering team triumphed and beat us in both finals.
Second semester, registering in more teams than term 1, including a team in Basketball boosted our chances of gaining more points for the sports trophy. However, lack of communication saw a dodgeball team drop out, costing us some sport points. The semester looked bright for most teams, with Ball Hockey, Futsal, Basketball all reaching finals. Ball Hockey eventually fell to Beta and Futsal fell to Adam’s Apples again, but our glory came with the Basketball team. Battling against a staff team was no easy task, but the team came through, conquering them by over 20 points.
We are currently still fighting Beta Theta Pi for the Hindmarch Sports Trophy and it’s going to be a tight race to the finish with the only REC events of Storm the Wall and Spring Fever Slowpitch Softball left.

This year’s AMS elections saw a total of 8 Alpha Delts running in 4 separate races! Brothers Imran Habib and Matt Campbell both ran for Senate, but despite their efforts, only Imran emerged victorious. Brother Michael Moll also campaigned valiantly, this time for the lofty position of AMS President. However, he was narrowly beaten and ended up coming in second place in the Presidential race.

Alpha Delta Phi also managed to maintain complete control of the Ubyssey Publication Society with Brother Oliver Thorne getting 50.4% of the votes over No Choice for president, whilst Brothers Imran Habib and Neil Andrews were also re-elected to the Board, and Brothers Omri Wallach and Martin Matusiak took the remaining 2 spots.

Finally, the last honourable mention goes to Alumnus Brother Anthony Bryson, who was re-elected as a Director of the Student Legal Fund Society.

Congratulations to all the Alpha Delts that were elected! We expect great things from you in the future.

Songfest 2011, wow. You should probably watch it by clicking right here, right now. From break dancing to beat boxing, lion king to south park, a great time was had by all who attended. This year too was the year of the Alpha Delts, with our own brothers of Alpha Delta Phi picking up the awards for Best Male Performance and Best Male Dancer (ask Shamai to bust a move), and the girls of Alpha Delta Pi picking up the Best Female Performance award!

And now few words from the man who spearheaded the Alpha Delt Songfest effort, Mr. Frank Rose Bailey IV:

Our performance at Songfest 2011 was something I am very proud to have been a part of. I had no clear idea what song we would do, but I knew it would be an A cappella piece. The music store had four songs to choose from, and of them Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King gave me the best vision of a performance. I was unsure specifically what we would do, but I saw our brothers in loin-cloths waltzing with each other, and I knew they would find the idea hilarious and appropriate.

In mid-November we started practicing the singing, and I knew that none of our brothers, aside from me and one other, had formal singing training nor sung on a regular basis. We all had a lot of work cut out for ourselves, and with diligent practice on everyone’s part, we were ready. We were not ready the day before the show, but the weekend before the show. This was good as we started the dancing the week of the show and practiced every day. I was also very proud to see all the dancers work very hard; they quickly learned their parts and brought a great stage presence.

When it came to show time we all felt prepared and ready to give a great performance. I am honored to have organized our performance and to have helped bring the Songfest trophy of 2011 to Alpha Delta Phi.
