Alpha Delts in the AMS

Posted in:Newson March 7th, 2011

This year’s AMS elections saw a total of 8 Alpha Delts running in 4 separate races! Brothers Imran Habib and Matt Campbell both ran for Senate, but despite their efforts, only Imran emerged victorious. Brother Michael Moll also campaigned valiantly, this time for the lofty position of AMS President. However, he was narrowly beaten and ended up coming in second place in the Presidential race.

Alpha Delta Phi also managed to maintain complete control of the Ubyssey Publication Society with Brother Oliver Thorne getting 50.4% of the votes over No Choice for president, whilst Brothers Imran Habib and Neil Andrews were also re-elected to the Board, and Brothers Omri Wallach and Martin Matusiak took the remaining 2 spots.

Finally, the last honourable mention goes to Alumnus Brother Anthony Bryson, who was re-elected as a Director of the Student Legal Fund Society.

Congratulations to all the Alpha Delts that were elected! We expect great things from you in the future.

Feeling the Brotherly Love at Songfest 2011

Posted in:Newson February 24th, 2011

Songfest 2011, wow. You should probably watch it by clicking right here, right now. From break dancing to beat boxing, lion king to south park, a great time was had by all who attended. This year too was the year of the Alpha Delts, with our own brothers of Alpha Delta Phi picking up the awards for Best Male Performance and Best Male Dancer (ask Shamai to bust a move), and the girls of Alpha Delta Pi picking up the Best Female Performance award!

And now few words from the man who spearheaded the Alpha Delt Songfest effort, Mr. Frank Rose Bailey IV:

Our performance at Songfest 2011 was something I am very proud to have been a part of. I had no clear idea what song we would do, but I knew it would be an A cappella piece. The music store had four songs to choose from, and of them Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King gave me the best vision of a performance. I was unsure specifically what we would do, but I saw our brothers in loin-cloths waltzing with each other, and I knew they would find the idea hilarious and appropriate.

In mid-November we started practicing the singing, and I knew that none of our brothers, aside from me and one other, had formal singing training nor sung on a regular basis. We all had a lot of work cut out for ourselves, and with diligent practice on everyone’s part, we were ready. We were not ready the day before the show, but the weekend before the show. This was good as we started the dancing the week of the show and practiced every day. I was also very proud to see all the dancers work very hard; they quickly learned their parts and brought a great stage presence.

When it came to show time we all felt prepared and ready to give a great performance. I am honored to have organized our performance and to have helped bring the Songfest trophy of 2011 to Alpha Delta Phi.

Alpha Delt vs FIJI Pledge Rugby Game

Posted in:Newson December 2nd, 2010

On Sunday the 24th of October a great tradition was reborn. After a long hiatus the brothers of Alpha Delt and FIJI took to the rugby pitch for a muddy and entertaining afternoon of rugby. The teams were evenly matched but in the end the FIGI’s took the victory 19-7. The chapter is looking forward to a possible 15 a side game in the spring.

On Thursday November 4th UBC took to the pool for a night of hotly contested co-rec water polo games: Inner-tube style.
Alpha Delt fielded two teams Green Death with ADPi and Green Machine with AGD. After a long night of sitting in inner-tubes “Green Death” emerged victorious winning the inner-tube water polo tournament making that the second year in a row for Alpha Delt.

Brother Jesse Ory and Jenni Murdoch in goal had a noteworthy performance and were instrumental to the “Green Death’s” Victory.

Alpha Delt’s Car Smash was yet again a great success!

Posted in:Newson November 20th, 2010

Congratulations to all the Alpha Delts for raising a total of $425 for UBC Hospital and Literacy BC, mostly due to the craziest fundraiser I’ve ever seen. The second annual Car Smash charity event took place this year on Wednesday November 10th. I didn’t think it possible, but the courtyard of the Student Union Building was completely transformed as two cars were towed onto campus by Drakes Towing, then subsequently destroyed by passers by who just needed to blow off a little midterm-induced steam. The event was made a great success by the brothers who came out to volunteer and by the organizations who generously contributed to the day of utter destruction. Much thanks to Drakes Towing, Vancouver Technical School, UBC Classroom Services, the Surrey Fire Department, alumnus brothers Anthony and Campbell Bryson (for the sentimental parting with their beloved Brysonmobile), and especially everyone who came out to beat the s*** out of our cars.
Can’t wait for next year’s smash!
WOOOO!
